Motor Club
What is HMS Conway Motor Club?
HMS Conway Motor Club brings together Old Conways, their families and others with a genuine Conway connection who share an interest in cars, motorcycles, motorhomes, tractors, mobility scooters and other interesting vehicles.
It is intended to be informal, practical and social: somewhere to share vehicles and projects, arrange runs and visits, exchange information, buy and sell useful items and keep in touch with others in the wider Conway community who still enjoy motoring in one form or another.
Who can join?
Membership is open to Old Conways, Family Members and Associate Members with a genuine connection to HMS Conway or the wider Conway community.
The Club is intended to remain informal and inclusive while retaining its Conway identity.
Join HMSCMCCars, motorcycles, motorhomes and everything else
HMSCMC is not restricted to classic cars or motorcycles. If a member owns, drives, rides, restores or simply has an enthusiasm for something interesting on wheels, it belongs here.
That might mean a sports car, a touring motorcycle, a motorhome, a tractor, a sidecar, a restoration project or even a mobility scooter with a bit of character.
HMS Conway Motorcycle Club
HMS Conway Motorcycle Club is the motorcycle section of HMS Conway Motor Club. It has its own identity within the wider Club, while sharing the same membership and overall purpose.
MotorcyclesHMS Conway Motorhome Club
HMS Conway Motorhome Club provides the same sort of home for members with motorhomes and campervans, whether they are interested in the vehicles themselves, touring, rallies, modifications or simply finding somewhere agreeable to park for the night.
Members’ MotorhomesClub Captains
HMSCMC is not burdened with presidents, vice-presidents, regional directors or elaborate committees. We did, however, have a perfectly good system of rank at Conway, so it seemed a pity not to misuse it. It is also rather better than appointing a Grand Poobah or a Supreme Grand Hierophant of the Order of the Black and White Eagle.
The old Conway Senior Cadet Captain wore the distinctive gold sleeve insignia on one sleeve, while the Chief Cadet Captain wore one on each. We have borrowed that tradition for the Motor Club, with suitably modified titles.
Chief Motor Captain
The nominal head of the whole HMS Conway Motor Club. The badge carries two Senior Cadet Captain insignia, reflecting the old Chief Cadet Captain convention.
Senior Motorcycle Captain
Responsible, insofar as anyone can be said to be responsible, for the Motorcycle Club. The badge carries one Senior Cadet Captain insignia.
Senior Motorhome Captain
The corresponding eminence of the Motorhome Club, likewise entitled to one insignia – along with Nelson’s woolly hat and glass of wine.
These are honorary club titles, not an attempt to recreate the Conway chain of command. They confer few powers, no additional pay and probably considerably more opportunities to be volunteered for things.
The captain versions of the club badges may also be used on club clothing, stickers and vehicles. A Senior Motorcycle Captain who dislikes hoodies, for example, has two perfectly good sides to a motorcycle fuel tank, while the side door of a motorhome offers an even larger canvas.
King of the Woods
And, of course, we can’t do without a King of the Woods.
Events and gatherings
The annual Conway Club AGM and dinner weekend provides a natural national gathering point, while regional runs, drives, visits and informal meetings can develop wherever members are close enough to organise them.
EventsFor Sale / Wanted
Members can advertise vehicles, parts, accessories and other motoring items for sale, or place wanted notices.
For Sale / WantedClub Shop
HMSCMC does not operate a conventional shop. Members can obtain Club artwork for windscreen stickers, hoodies and other items and arrange their own printing or embroidery.
Club ShopIndependent and privately managed
HMS Conway Motor Club is a separate, privately managed initiative. It is not affiliated with, operated by or an official section of The Conway Club.
HMSCMC and this website are managed independently by Phil van Bergen (69-71).
